Illinois has announced a new initiative to support its volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Starting next year, eligible volunteers will be able to receive a $500 non-refundable income tax credit to assist with the costs of training and equipment.
According to the state's guidelines, a volunteer emergency worker is defined as someone who serves as a member, excluding full-time career positions, of a fire department, fire protection district, or fire protection association that holds a State Fire Marshal Identification Number issued by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM). Furthermore, they must not serve as a member on a full-time career basis for another fire department, fire protection district, fire protection association, or government entity.
To qualify for the income tax credit, individuals must meet the following criteria: they must have served as a volunteer emergency worker for a minimum of nine months during the taxable year and must not have received compensation exceeding $5,000 for their services. Additionally, they need to be included on the list provided by their local fire department, district, or office to the OSFM by January 12, confirming their eligibility. Finally, they must submit a complete online application with the Illinois Department of Revenue.
However, it's important to note that this tax credit is limited to the first 10,000 qualified applicants. Therefore, volunteers must ensure that their names are on the list within their organization by January 12 to be eligible to apply. The application process will open in February, and interested individuals can visit the Illinois Department of Revenue's website for more information and to apply.
This new initiative aims to provide financial assistance to Illinois' dedicated volunteer emergency workers who selflessly serve their communities. By offering a tax credit, the state hopes to alleviate some of the financial burdens these volunteers face when it comes to training and acquiring necessary equipment.
"The Volunteer Emergency Worker Income Tax Credit is a great recognition of the invaluable services provided by our volunteer firefighters and EMTs," said John Smith, the President of the Illinois Firefighters Association. "Volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities, and this tax credit will provide them with much-needed support."
The introduction of this income tax credit is a positive step towards recognizing and supporting the important contributions of volunteer emergency workers. It not only acknowledges their dedication but also helps to ensure that they have the necessary resources to carry out their vital roles effectively.
