WHERE’S AMY?
Rep. Elik attended the National Conference of State Legislatures Legislative Summit in Louisville, Kentucky. She represented Illinois and participated in learning sessions on topics such as Artificial Intelligence, election laws, crime, and education. "I feel strongly that I have a responsibility to you to continually educate myself about important topics," she stated.
LOCAL OLYMPIAN
Rep. Elik joined the community in Wood River to celebrate local Olympian Jayden Ulrich with a parade and ceremony where Ulrich received keys to the City of Wood River and the Village of East Alton, along with legislative commendations from Rep. Elik and Senator Erica Harriss.
CRIME
A proposed bill in Illinois could reduce prison sentences by half for even severe crimes like first-degree murder and aggravated predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. This proposal has raised significant debate over its potential impact on public safety.
In related news, Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker expressed concerns over the end of cash bail in Illinois, citing unintended consequences such as increased overdoses among released suspects who lack access to treatment programs previously available in jail.
JOBS
The unemployment rate increased across all 14 metropolitan areas in Illinois over the past year, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (DES). While some metro areas saw job growth, others experienced declines.
