State Representative Amy Elik (R-Alton) collaborated with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office at Meridian Village this week to conduct a seminar aimed at providing seniors with tools to combat fraud. Fraud expert Marsha Griffin from the Attorney General’s office presented on how seniors are being targeted and methods to prepare against such threats.

“Fraud schemes are becoming more and more realistic and serious every day. Seniors are targeted using complex tactics and are at constant risk of falling victim to fraud,” said Rep. Elik. “It’s important to be aware of the ways that these scammers are coming after you, and to know what to do if you’ve become victim to one of their elaborate schemes.”

Rep. Elik shared five crucial tips for seniors:

1. **Recognizing Suspicious Activities**: Identifying common warning signs of fraud is essential. These often include unexpected contact via phone or email, promises of high returns on investments with no risk, and threats of legal action if immediate payment is not made.

2. **Verifying Contacts**: It is vital to verify the identity of anyone requesting personal information by using official channels rather than relying on contact details provided by the caller or emailer.

3. **Using Secure Transaction Methods**: Learning safe methods for conducting financial transactions is important, particularly avoiding untraceable payment methods favored by scammers such as wire transfers and prepaid debit cards.

4. **Staying Informed About Scam Tactics**: Scammers constantly refine their methods; therefore, staying informed about new scam tactics is crucial.

5. **Reporting Suspicious Activities**: Knowing how to report suspected fraud can mitigate damage and help prevent others from becoming victims.

Elik emphasized that some important hotlines and helplines from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office are available for further assistance.

Attendees were provided with information packets containing useful resources on fraud prevention and resolution. Those who could not attend can obtain this information by contacting Rep. Elik’s office at 618-433-8046.
