I hope you’ve been enjoying some of this weather as the season turns to fall. I wanted to give you an update on what I’ve been working on over the past couple of weeks, as well as some stuff you may find interesting from around the state.
State Representative Charlie Meier has been actively engaging with his district and participating in various events. Recently, he attended the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund Open House in Caseyville, which he described as "very informational." He also spoke at the Annual Grange Meeting in Collinsville, appreciating its historical significance as "the oldest American agricultural advocacy group with a national scope."
Meier joined the Community Link Buddy Walk to support Down Syndrome awareness and celebrated the 175th Anniversary of the Carlyle Mason Lodge. Additionally, he participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new solar project at Troy Township Building.
In wildlife management news, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) announced an increase in bobcat hunting permits due to successful conservation efforts. Meier commented, “The doubling of bobcat permits is a testament to the successful conservation efforts and responsible management of our natural resources.” He emphasized balancing conservation with recreational activities like hunting and noted economic benefits from permit sales.
On infrastructure, Meier announced that Route 161 between Albers and New Baden is now open after extensive roadwork due to mine subsidence damage. He thanked local officials for their collaboration on this project.
Former Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan is facing trial for federal corruption charges. His trial began at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse, where prosecutors aim to prove him guilty of racketeering conspiracy alongside Michael McClain.
For those seeking energy assistance, applications for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) are available until August 15, 2025. This program aids qualified households with energy bills through direct payments to service providers.
Illinois remains a leader in pumpkin production, contributing over 650 million pounds annually. Central Illinois' rich soil supports major processing plants like Nestle Libby in Morton and Seneca Foods in Princeville.
Lastly, Meier addressed concerns about drug influxes at correctional facilities across Illinois and assured constituents that solutions are being pursued.
