Rep. Amy Elik addressed the death of Illinois State Police (ISP) Trooper Corey Thompsen in an October 21 Facebook post, stating, "My thoughts and prayers are with Trooper Thompsen’s family and the entire law enforcement community during this tragic time."

"My thoughts and prayers are with Trooper Thompsen's family and the entire law enforcement community during this tragic time," said Amy E. Elik, State Representative, according to Facebook.

According to her Facebook post, Elik shared a link to an ISP news release on the organization’s Facebook page. The news release detailed that Thompsen was struck at the intersection of Leverett Road in Champaign County on October 18 after completing a traffic enforcement detail as part of a motorcycle patrol. The 28-year-old had been with the ISP for nearly five years. Following the accident, a witness provided first aid before he was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He is survived by his wife, Chelsea; his parents Susan and Steve; and his brothers.

"This is a sad moment. We are hurting," said Brendan F. Kelly, director of the ISP, in the October 21 news release. Kelly added that Corey’s colleagues across various units within ISP are also grieving alongside his family. He expressed hope that Thompsen would be the last trooper lost in such circumstances.

Thompsen was honored with a police procession from Urbana to St. Joseph on Monday, October 21, as reported by WCIA. A long line of law enforcement officers participated, and numerous community members gathered to pay their respects as his body was transported to Freese Funeral Home in St. Joseph.

Elik has represented the people of the 111th District since 2021 after winning an election in 2020. Her official biography notes her roles as a Foster Township Trustee, board member for St. Mary’s Catholic School, and co-leader of the Fosterburg AG 4H club.
