A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Jerseyville City Council seeking detailed information about its council members on October 15, 2024. The request was made by us at Metro East Sun, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140, include a list of all council members with specific details such as their names, titles, year they were appointed, their term duration (2 or 4 years), and the date when their term expires. We have expressed our preference for these records to be provided in an electronic format for ease of access and analysis.
As a media organization, we are involved in gathering and reporting news to the public. Access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In line with this mission, we believe that we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals given our role in disseminating information. This will allow us to continue providing comprehensive coverage of local government affairs without financial constraints.
