Fifty years ago, Cathy Fenton began her career at Memorial Hospital. Her journey has been marked by continuous learning and advancement. In 2018, she received the Distinguished Magnet Nurse of the Year award. Reflecting on her early days, Fenton said, "I’m a nurse in the OR now, but I started on the medical-surgical floor." She credits her growth to mentors like Eileen Botkin and supportive surgeons who provided training.

Fenton was part of Memorial's first heart program in 1990. "Starting the heart program was an example of the hospital going above and beyond," she noted. The initiative involved extensive education for staff across departments.

Discussing the culture at Memorial's OR, Fenton shared, "The OR is a family. I’ve made lifelong friends here." She emphasized patient safety as a core focus: "You must be their advocate."

Over five decades, Fenton has witnessed significant advancements in surgical procedures. "Surgery is trending toward minimally invasive surgery," she observed.

For new nurses, Fenton advises pursuing education and professional development opportunities: "Take every opportunity to advance your education."
