State Representative Charlie Meier of Okawville has been actively seeking solutions following the cessation of funding for BCMW's senior home meal deliveries. This funding halt affected Meals on Wheels programs statewide, leaving many seniors without regular meal services.
Meier collaborated with various agencies to secure short-term funding for BCMW, though a permanent solution remains elusive. In response, he personally prepared and delivered 160 hot meals to BCMW Community Services. The meals, which included pork chops, green beans, baked potatoes, fruit, and coleslaw, were distributed to seniors who have been without meal deliveries since November 1st.
"When I heard that this program was going to be halted, I couldn’t sit by and do nothing," Meier stated. "I’ve been working with the leaders at BCMW and throughout our communities to find a solution."
Among those receiving meals was Lucille Knolhoff, a 97-year-old resident who expressed concern over her weight loss due to the absence of meal deliveries. "Since they stopped bringing by my meals, I have lost 20 pounds," she said.
Efforts are underway in Springfield as Republicans work on legislative measures to prevent future funding issues for such programs. Meier is a chief co-sponsor of House Bill 5911, known as the "Feed our Seniors Act." This bill proposes reallocating funds from migrant welcome centers to support Meals on Wheels through the Department on Aging.
"There is no reason these people should not be getting the meals they deserve," Meier emphasized. He highlighted concerns over state spending priorities and advocated for ensuring seniors receive necessary nutrition through consistent meal services.
