Late last year, Charlie Meier, a representative of the 109th district, received unexpected news during a routine blood test. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer. "I was surprised when I received word from the doctor because I’ve always gotten back a clean bill of health," he stated.
Meier plans to begin radiation treatment at St. Elizabeth’s in O’Fallon, which is expected to last at least 28 days. He remains optimistic about his prognosis, noting that this type of cancer is highly treatable.
He shared this personal information publicly to maintain transparency with his constituents in Bond, Clinton, Madison, St. Clair, and Washington counties. "I expect to be able to continue my work representing the people," Meier assured.
Despite his diagnosis, Meier intends to focus on his responsibilities but will step down from his leadership role within the House Republicans to concentrate on both his health and duties towards the 109th district.
Addressing men specifically, Meier emphasized the importance of regular health screenings: "If I did not have my routine blood test...I would have never known anything was wrong." He encouraged men over 50 to stay vigilant about their health due to higher risks associated with prostate cancer.
He expressed solidarity with others battling cancer or other health conditions: "My heart goes out to you and know that you have a friend in the fight."
Charlie Meier concluded by requesting prayers from those who support him during this challenging time.
