State Representative Charlie Meier of Okawville has announced a petition drive aimed at gathering signatures from residents who oppose a legislative proposal to legalize prostitution in Illinois. Meier expressed concerns about the potential increase in risks to women and young girls if penalties for prostitution are removed.
“Illinois Democrats will go to any length to increase revenue, even if it means putting our women and girls at risk,” said Meier. “They will not stop at anything to find new things to tax, and this is just too far. I am so disturbed by this proposal, but I’m more concerned for the safety of women of all ages. I worry for the increase of sexual assault and human trafficking that will stem from this radical proposal.”
Meier is seeking input from his constituents on this issue and has launched a petition on his website for residents to express their opposition.
“I genuinely want to know what my constituents think on legalizing prostitution. That’s why I’m launching a petition drive,” said Meier. “I hope to be able to present the 109th District’s opposition to this dangerous legislation to the legislators who support this movement, so they can see that their agenda has no business in Southern Illinois.”
The petition opposing the legalization of prostitution in Illinois is available online.
