State Representative Kevin Schmidt from Millstadt has commented on the recent guilty verdict of former Speaker Michael Madigan. In a statement released after the announcement, Rep. Schmidt expressed that "Former Speaker Michael Madigan has plagued Illinois with his organized corruption and today’s guilty verdict speaks to all citizens that bad behavior by politicians will have consequences."

Schmidt emphasized the Republican call for ethics reform and highlighted the need for truth and transparency within state government. He pointed out that "The culture of corruption in Illinois has had a negative impact on the General Assembly and the people who are served by elected officials." According to Schmidt, while this verdict is a positive step forward, more work is necessary to move beyond what he refers to as the "Madigan Way" in legislative processes.

Madigan was convicted on 10 counts, including bribery, conspiracy, and wire fraud. House Republicans are pressing for swift action on ethics reform in response to these developments.
