This week in Springfield, significant developments took place as Governor Pritzker delivered his Budget Address and State of the State. Representative Elik shared insights on these events in her Capitol Update.

Governor Pritzker has proposed what is being described as the largest budget in Illinois history. According to Representative Elik, "State spending under Governor Pritzker has grown exponentially since he took office in 2019." The current budget is $15 billion higher than when he assumed office. During his address, the Governor's proposal included nearly $2 billion in additional spending. Representative Elik criticized the Governor's rhetoric and spending plans, stating that it was reminiscent of last year's controversial legislative actions.

In education news, there is a growing push to ban cellphones in Illinois classrooms. This follows trends seen in over twelve states that have already implemented similar policies. Wisconsin recently passed a statewide school cellphone ban, while Illinois has yet to act on this issue at a state level. Some local districts have independently restricted cellphone use.

Regarding transportation, the implementation of REAL ID requirements is approaching. By May 7, 2025, individuals will need a REAL ID to access federal facilities and board domestic flights. The process for obtaining a REAL ID involves visiting an Illinois Secretary of State’s facility with necessary documentation such as proof of identity and residency.

Representative Elik announced upcoming mobile office hours at the Glen Carbon Public Library for constituents needing assistance with state agency issues.
