Madison County Republicans Chairman Ray Wesley has criticized Governor JB Pritzker for his handling of Illinois' Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults program, alleging that it resulted in the waste of $1.6 billion in taxpayer funds while misleading the public. Wesley made these remarks to Metro East Sun on March 3.

"Governor JB Pritzker's administration grossly mismanaged Illinois' Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults program, allowing $1.6 billion in taxpayer money to be wasted on noncitizens over the past four years," said Wesley. "His administration severely underestimated costs and enrollment numbers, leading to skyrocketing expenses, fraud, and errors—including duplicate IDs and undocumented enrollees with Social Security numbers. Even as the program spiraled out of control, Pritzker misled taxpayers by downplaying its financial impact and avoiding accountability for the disastrous overspending. Illinois deserves better leadership—one that prioritizes fiscal responsibility, transparency, and the needs of its legal residents."

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the program has cost Illinois $1.6 billion since 2020, exceeding Governor Pritzker's initial estimates. A state audit revealed that Pritzker's administration underestimated both enrollment and costs, with some expenses surpassing projections by 282%. Errors were noted, including duplicate recipient IDs and undocumented enrollees possessing Social Security numbers. Despite the increasing financial strain, Pritzker recently decided to terminate the program by July 1, although Republican leaders are advocating for an immediate cessation.

Capitol News Illinois reported that Pritzker presented his seventh budget on February 19 amidst economic slowdowns and uncertainties regarding future federal funding. The state is facing a projected $3.2 billion revenue shortfall for fiscal year 2026 as federal pandemic aid diminishes and tax revenues remain stagnant. Republican lawmakers have proposed reducing aid for undocumented residents to cut costs, which reportedly reached $558 million during this fiscal year alone. Additionally, former President Trump's efforts to reduce federal funding to Illinois have contributed to budget uncertainties, particularly after a temporary halt in disbursements by his administration.
