April is the designated month for National Child Abuse Prevention, focusing on increasing awareness about the consequences of child abuse and neglect. The initiative underscores the collaboration required among families and communities to protect children's well-being—physically, emotionally, and mentally. Everyone has a role in preventing neglect and various forms of abuse by staying informed and proactive.

Often, child abuse remains hidden because signs are unrecognized or individuals feel it is not their concern. Ignoring these issues only allows them to worsen over time. Statistics reveal that a child, on average, tells seven adults before a formal report is filed, with up to 70% of cases remaining unreported. This leaves many children at risk.

For those who suspect a child is being harmed, immediate action can be taken by calling 911 or the Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-25-ABUSE (1-800-252-2873). Non-emergency suspicions can be directed to the Online Reporting System.

Recognizing the warning signs is key in combatting child abuse effectively. The public is encouraged to learn these indicators as part of the prevention efforts.

The campaign stresses the collective responsibility in society to acknowledge and address signs of abuse, providing timely reminders during National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Creating a safe environment for children is a shared effort among families, communities, and individuals. Each individual’s action can make a difference, emphasizing that ignoring the signs is not an option.
