State Representative Kevin Schmidt from Millstadt has taken a step towards addressing food insecurity in Illinois by co-sponsoring House Bill 1607. This bill aims to create the Commission on Eliminating Food Deserts Act, focusing on expanding access to healthy food and daily essentials, especially in underserved communities and rural areas.
Representative Schmidt expressed his support for the bill by stating, "I support HB1607 because families should never have to struggle to find groceries and other daily essentials due to inadequate access to grocery stores." He emphasized the importance of addressing food insecurity in Illinois, particularly in the East St. Louis area, adding that the bill would "help fill the gap in food insecurities we continue to see around the state" and promote healthier lifestyles by improving access to fresh food.
The bill addresses various factors leading to food deserts, such as transportation issues and income inequality, which contribute to the lack of grocery stores in some areas. Schmidt also shared his personal commitment to the cause, mentioning, "I’m very passionate about helping others who struggle with food insecurity which is why I donate my legislative pay raise to local food pantries each month."
In support of these efforts, $6.4 million in grant funds were allocated in 2024 by the Illinois Department of Agriculture to strengthen the state’s food supply chain. Additional resources and support can be accessed through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Representative Schmidt represents the 114th District, covering parts of St. Clair County.
