State Representative Kevin Schmidt of the 114th District had a busy week filled with various activities and meetings, according to recent updates. Among the notable events, Representative Schmidt recognized Donna Mae’s Beauty Salon as the "Business of the Month" for April. The salon has been a staple in Mascoutah's community for over sixty years, providing salon services since its inception in 1965. Representative Schmidt praised the owner, Donna Mae Schlueter, for her longstanding commitment to the community and her role in local economic development.

“Donna Mae’s Beauty Salon has been committed to serving locals with salon services and products for over sixty years,” Schmidt noted. He further highlighted Schlueter's community involvement, referencing her positions in local organizations, including being Chairperson of the Economic Development Commission and her historic roles in the Chamber of Commerce and city board. Schmidt emphasized the importance of small businesses like Donna Mae’s in supporting the local economy and fostering community ties.

Donna Mae Schlueter expressed her community service philosophy simply, stating, “Sharing is caring and caring is sharing. Making a difference and touching a life.”

In addition to his engagement with local businesses, Representative Schmidt continued to encourage nominations for future business recognitions. Constituents are invited to nominate businesses they believe deserve acknowledgment through a provided form.

Furthermore, House Republicans, among them Representatives Patrick Windhorst, Dave Severin, and David Friess, renewed their call for ethics reform in the statehouse to address public corruption. They pointed at the prior convictions within the Illinois General Assembly, particularly noting the case of former House Speaker Michael Madigan.

In a separate legislative development, the Illinois House recently rejected a Democrat-sponsored bill, House Bill 3332, by a 49-51 vote. The bill would have allowed for the release of individuals incarcerated for offenses committed under the age of 21. The setback came as some Democrats opposed or abstained from voting, resulting in the legislation's failure to pass.

Other local highlights included Representative Schmidt's interaction with local photographer Shonda Deneault, known for her work featuring hummingbirds, and an upcoming public event scheduled for April 25th to discuss state issues with constituents.

Finally, Representative Schmidt acknowledged the onset of the morel mushroom season around the state and conveyed festive wishes for Easter, emphasizing themes of renewal and hope.
