I attended a rally at Collinsville High School organized to support keeping high school mascots determined by local school boards. The event saw a strong turnout from the local community.

The rally opposes state legislation, HB3527 and HB1237, which some see as overreach. "We are fighting back against state overreach from HB3527 & HB1237!!," said Schmidt. "I voted NO to these bills because high school mascot names should be determined by local school boards, not politicians."

House Bill 3527 requires schools to ban mascots considered discriminatory towards individuals with disabilities, a rule affecting the Freeburg Midgets. House Bill 1237 mandates school boards to prohibit schools from using native names, logos, or mascots.

The opposition to these bills is staunch, with arguments centered around local authority in making such decisions. Both bills have prompted protests and rallies involving community members who wish to have these decisions retained at the school board level.
