Senator Harriss has issued a joint statement regarding the fiscal year 2026 budget and a new $1.50 delivery fee aimed at funding Chicago Transit. In the statement, Senator Harriss expressed concern over the financial impact on Illinois families.

"Illinois families are already feeling the pinch, and this budget only makes things worse. It adds nearly a billion dollars in new taxes," said Senator Harriss. The senator also highlighted that another bill introduces a $1.50 delivery service fee to support Chicago Transit without providing substantial relief to those most affected.

The budget, noted as the largest in state history, passed with bipartisan opposition. "Despite being the largest budget in state history, it passed with bipartisan opposition, a clear sign it doesn’t reflect the priorities of our communities," stated Harriss.

Senator Harriss criticized the transparency of the budgeting process, stating that lawmakers had less than six hours to review over 3,300 pages before voting. "This is my third budget cycle, and every year, the process becomes less transparent," said Harriss. "Illinoisans deserve better. They deserve a fair, honest process, not backroom deals and rushed decisions."
