State Representative Kevin Schmidt has raised concerns over the recent Illinois state budget passed by Democrats. The FY26 budget amounts to $55.2 billion, a $2 billion increase from the previous year, and includes $1 billion in new taxes and fund sweeps. Schmidt criticized the process, stating that Republicans were excluded from negotiations.
“This massive budget does not reflect the needs of Illinois citizens," said Rep. Schmidt. "Bad public policy has cost the state billions.”
He expressed disappointment over what he described as increased financial burdens on working families due to the tax hikes embedded in the new budget.
Rep. Schmidt also highlighted his legislative efforts with House Bill 57, which aims to align Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILAs) with other state-run facilities regarding visitation rights for essential support persons. “This change was needed and I’m happy to see HB57 pass through the General Assembly,” Schmidt stated.
The bill is now awaiting Governor Pritzker's signature.
In addition to legislative matters, Schmidt engaged with constituents at various community events including a taxpayers organization meeting in Freeburg and discussions with Mascoutah Chamber of Commerce about business concerns.
On June 6th, D-Day was commemorated as an important historical event, while looking forward, Schmidt announced upcoming community gatherings including a Coffee Talk session on June 17th and a job fair scheduled for November 6th in East St. Louis.
Additionally, there was a special mention of renaming Millstadt Post Office in honor of Marine Corporal Matthew A. Wyatt who died protecting his platoon in Iraq.
