Governor JB Pritzker has signed the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget for Illinois, which was passed by Democratic legislators. The budget amounts to $55.2 billion, marking an increase of nearly $2 billion from the previous fiscal year. Since Governor Pritzker took office in 2019, state spending has increased by over $15 billion, a 38% rise.

State Representative Kevin Schmidt recently attended a meeting with St. Clair County police chiefs to discuss the impact of new legislation on law enforcement duties. He emphasized the importance of understanding how laws affect community safety.

Schmidt also met with Shaun Cobbs Sr., CEO of Cobbs Vizion Studios, who is working on expanding his studio in East St. Louis into a film and digital media production campus that will serve as a cultural and economic hub.

In other local news, Colonel John D. Poole handed over command to Colonel Matthew L Collins at Scott Air Force Base's 375 Air Mobility Wing change of command ceremony.

St Clair Chiropractic has been named "Business of the Month" for June by State Representative Kevin Schmidt. Dr. Rachel Engelke and Dr. Melissa Huber were recognized for their superior patient care and services provided to Mascoutah and surrounding areas.

Schmidt is hosting a Shred Event and Canned Food Drive on July 12 at Village Park in Millstadt, offering free shredding services for confidential documents.

The new budget includes more than $800 million in revenue changes through tax hikes and temporary measures that critics argue do not truly balance the state's finances. Starting July 1, there will be an increase in cell phone service taxes along with new taxes on sports wagers, short-term rental properties like Airbnb, tobacco products, and potentially package deliveries.

House Republicans are opposing these tax increases while advocating for reduced spending and pro-growth policies.

June 27 marks National PTSD Awareness Day, highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by individuals affected by trauma such as veterans or survivors of abuse or disasters.

Representative Kevin Schmidt encourages nominations for businesses within the 114th District to be recognized as "Business of the Month." His office can be contacted at 618-215-1050 for further information.
