HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital recently celebrated the graduation of 13 physicians from the Saint Louis University (SLU) Family Medicine Residency Program. The ceremony took place at Enjoy Church in O’Fallon, Illinois, on June 27, 2025.
Chris Klay, President and CEO of HSHS Southern Illinois Market, which includes St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, explained that each year the hospital presents the Franciscan Spirit Award to a graduating physician who exemplifies their Core Values. This year, Captain Ross Stanton, MD, JD, MPH received the award after being nominated by peers and faculty and selected by senior leadership.
Nominations for Dr. Stanton emphasized his commitment to patient care and his consideration of social determinants in medical decision-making. His compassion was also noted as a key attribute.
The SLU Family Medicine Residency Program is unique as it integrates military and civilian training at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital over three years. This collaboration allows residents to gain diverse experiences while providing quality care to both general public and military communities.
Residents are trained in various specialties including obstetrical care and inpatient medicine within Intensive Care Units.
Klay stated that "St. Elizabeth’s has been caring for the communities of the Metro East since 1875," highlighting their partnership with Saint Louis University and other organizations to address the national need for primary care doctors.
