Energy prices in Illinois have increased sharply, with electric bills rising by an estimated 18% to 22% compared to the previous year. In response to these higher costs, Ameren Illinois has introduced a new initiative aimed at supporting income-qualified customers who are struggling to pay their energy bills.
The program, known as the Supplemental Arrearage Reduction Program (SARP), is a $10 million effort that provides eligible customers—those who qualify for LIHEAP—with up to $1,000 per year for each service connection, including both gas and electric. Customers can access information about SARP and apply through the main dashboard of their Ameren Illinois customer account.
Ameren Illinois continues to offer additional programs designed to help customers manage their energy expenses. Further details about these resources—including billing options, energy efficiency programs, financial assistance opportunities, and supply choices—can be found on the Find Your Path to Energy Savings website.
Schmidt, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state's 114th House District, replacing previous state representative LaToya Greenwood.
"Some customers are seeing even greater increases on their monthly bills, which is why Ameren Illinois has launched a new program to provide financial relief to income-qualified customers."
Eligible residents are encouraged to explore all available options for assistance as energy prices remain high across the state.
