Illinois State Representative Kevin Schmidt (R-Cahokia) has reported results from his 2025 Legislative Survey, which gathered feedback from constituents in the 114th District. Schmidt stated that he received 364 submissions this year.
"Everyone’s voice matters, and it helps guide me when voting on legislation," Schmidt said.
The survey asked residents about several issues affecting Illinois. When asked if they supported a proposed “No Sales Tax” holiday period for school supplies around the start of the school year, a majority responded yes. Most respondents also supported legislation to provide veterans with a paid day off on Veterans Day each year.
A question about legalizing prostitution in Illinois, drafted by another legislator from Chicago, found most participants opposed to the idea. Regarding efforts to repeal the Firearm ID (FOID) card requirement—while maintaining federal background checks—a majority expressed support for repeal.
Schmidt noted that he voted against pay raises for legislators and donates his own monthly pay raise to local food pantries. The survey indicated that most respondents do not think legislators should receive a pay raise this year.
On immigration spending, most who answered believed Illinois should spend less tax dollars on immigrants. Respondents were also asked which state services they would like protected as Illinois faces a budget deficit of over $3 billion; top responses were recorded but not detailed in the report.
Schmidt was elected to represent the state's 114th House District in 2023 as a Republican, succeeding LaToya Greenwood. More information about his election can be found at https://ballotpedia.org/Kevin_Schmidt_(Illinois).
