Energy policies in Illinois have been a topic of debate, with some officials raising concerns about their impact on residents and businesses. According to Illinois State Representative Kevin Schmidt (R-Cahokia), "Energy policies pushed by Democrats have reduced Illinois’ generation capacity and it’s costing homeowners, renters, and businesses big time. I support using all available sources of energy to keep costs down for Illinois residents, including coal and natural gas. Elected officials in Illinois must take action on reforming energy policies now."

Schmidt has voiced his support for several bills aimed at addressing energy reliability and cost issues in the state. One measure, HB4087, would create the Illinois Regional Generation Reliability Task Force to monitor the power grid's reliability. Another proposal, HB4088, seeks to repeal several acts related to clean energy transitions and planning.

Other bills Schmidt supports focus on amending the Environmental Protection Act by extending deadlines for achieving reduced or zero carbon dioxide emissions. HB1544 would extend these deadlines by five years; HB1545 would grant a ten-year extension; HB1546 specifically targets certain electric generating units that use coal as fuel with a five-year extension; while HB1547 proposes a ten-year extension for these same units.

HB4050 aims to restore previous provisions regarding greenhouse gases in the Environmental Protection Act before Public Act 102-662 took effect and would repeal the definition of “clean energy.” Additionally, SB76 proposes expanding new nuclear power plants within the state.

Schmidt was elected as a Republican representative to serve Illinois' 114th House District in 2023, succeeding LaToya Greenwood. More information about his election can be found at https://ballotpedia.org/Kevin_Schmidt.
