Grant applications are now being accepted for the Safe Route to School Program, which is managed by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) with federal funding. The program aims to support projects that enhance safety and reduce traffic around schools serving students from kindergarten through high school.

A total of $12 million will be distributed in this grant cycle, with each project eligible for up to $250,000. The types of projects considered include new sidewalks, traffic-calming features, and improvements designed to increase accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

School districts, local governments, planning organizations, and nonprofit associations can apply for funding. According to the program guidelines, preference will be given to schools that serve higher percentages of low-income students and students with disabilities.

Applications must be submitted by October 15th. Award recipients are expected to be announced in the spring. Additional information about selection criteria and registration details for application webinars can be found on the Safe Routes to School homepage or by contacting [email protected].

Schmidt, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state's 114th House District, replacing previous state representative LaToya Greenwood. More information about his election can be found at https://ballotpedia.org/Kevin_Schmidt_(Illinois).
