This week in Metro East history.

Died September 5, 2000, Collinsville native, NFL player

George Musso died on September 5, 2000, in Edwardsville, Illinois. He was born in Collinsville and played multiple sports in high school. Musso attended Millikin University, where he played football, basketball, baseball, and track. He joined the Chicago Bears in 1933 and played as a guard and tackle for 12 seasons. Musso appeared in seven NFL championship games and won four titles with the Bears. He was the first player to earn All-NFL honors at two positions. After his football career, Musso settled in Edwardsville, where he owned a restaurant and served as Madison County sheriff and treasurer. Musso was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982. His connection to Collinsville remained important throughout his life. He is remembered for his contributions to football and his local community.
