The Illinois Department of Agriculture is urging residents to help monitor the spread of the spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect first identified in the state in 2023. The pest has become more common and poses a risk to agriculture by feeding on plants such as grapevines, fruit trees, and maples. While it does not threaten humans or animals, its presence could harm crops and outdoor environments.

Officials highlight that the spotted lanternfly is frequently found in residential areas like backyards and gardens rather than commercial farms. Because of this, public participation is seen as key to managing its spread. Residents are asked to report any sightings by emailing lanternfly@illinois.edu with a photo and location details. These reports help experts track where the insect appears and develop response strategies.

The department emphasizes that early detection is essential for controlling the pest. People are advised to inspect outdoor items—including vehicles and firewood—for insects or egg masses before traveling. Any findings should be removed and destroyed to prevent further infestation.
