The Illinois General Assembly concluded its veto session this week in Springfield. State Representative Kevin Schmidt (R-Cahokia) expressed disappointment over the lack of progress, stating that the session was largely unproductive and marked by partisan blame.
"We must find better ways to use our time at the Capitol that benefits our constituents," Schmidt said. He added hope that when lawmakers return on October 28, they will focus on finding solutions to reduce living costs for Illinois families.
A major topic during the session was Senate Bill 25, an energy omnibus bill expected to be introduced by Democratic legislators. Schmidt criticized the proposed legislation, arguing it would increase energy rates for residents while reducing production and reliability. "Under the guise of 'green energy,' Illinoisans will see higher rates, less production, and a less reliable energy supply," he said. Schmidt also raised concerns about provisions in SB25 that would shift authority over local projects such as batteries, solar, and wind from counties to the state government.
Schmidt advocated for maintaining traditional energy sources like natural gas, coal, and fossil fuels. "Instead of focusing on expensive and unattainable green energy pipe-dreams, we should focus on preserving our energy from sources like natural gas, coal, and fossil fuels that keep our economy moving," he stated.
Illinois electricity customers experienced significant increases in utility bills over the summer due to high temperatures and increased demand. This has heightened public concern about future rate hikes if new policies are enacted.
Schmidt also accused Democratic leaders of working behind closed doors to advance what he called a "Green New Giveaway" package that could result in higher taxes statewide.
Residents interested in community services can sign up for Schmidt’s Mobile DMV Event scheduled for December 2 in O’Fallon. Additional information is available through his office.
Schmidt has represented Illinois' 114th House District since being elected in 2023 as a Republican successor to LaToya Greenwood.
