U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) is seeking further sanctions against the University of Phoenix after the for-profit college was placed on probation by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).
The University of Phoenix is now prohibited from enrolling any new service members and their spouses under the DOD's Tuition Assistance (TA) and MyCAA programs.
Durbin said he wants the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to review DOD’s findings and take appropriate action to protect students and federal taxpayer dollars.
After a lengthy review, the DOD announced earlier this month it was placing the University of Phoenix on probation and excluding the school from participating in its TA Program.
"As part of its probationary status, University of Phoenix will not be allowed to enroll new students using TA benefits,” Durbin said. “I am asking the Department of Education and the VA to work with DOD to review its findings and take appropriate action to protect students and federal taxpayer dollars.”
He added that the DOD also needs to investigate the University of Phoenix after the publication of an article by Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting documenting the for-profit college’s deceptive marketing practices and its infringement on military trademarks.
