Education reporting requirements for lawyers to move online

The Illinois State Supreme Court this week amended Rule 796 that will push Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) reporting for lawyers online.

According to MCLE requirements, attorneys practicing in Illinois must submit proof of a minimum number of continuing education hours each year to prove that they are keeping up with the latest developments in their field and providing top services. The amended rule will require attorneys to submit these certifications electronically.

“Over the past several years, the number of attorneys taking advantage of the option for electronic reporting has steadily increased," Chief Justice Rita B. Garman said. "Thus, the new rule does not impose a burden on attorneys. Rather, it responds to the changes we have seen in the way in which practitioners interact with the MCLE program. Electronic reporting of continuing legal education credits will be more convenient for attorneys, more efficient for the MCLE board to process and more economical for all involved.”

The amendment to Rule 796 continues the state's effort to digitize the logistical aspects of maintaining a legal career. In May, the state changed Rule 756 to mandate online registration with Illinois Attorney Registration and the Disciplinary Commission. Online registration had been available for years but not required.

The new rule takes effect February 1.
