SIUE men's soccer in Sweet 16; women's team eliminated

The Southern Illinois-Edwardsville men's soccer team made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division I Men's Tournament after beating No. 11 Butler on penalty kicks in double overtime Nov. 20 in Indianapolis, according to siuecougars.com.

The Cougars are scheduled to face No. 2 Wake Forest at 4 p.m. Sunday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The Cougars topped Butler 5-4 on penalty kicks, with goalkeeper Kyle Del Santo making a big save in the sixth round of kicks to clinch the win. It was the second-straight penalty-kick win of the tournament for SIUE, which beat Michigan State 9-8 in the shootout portion of its first-round game Nov. 17 in East Lansing, Michigan. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and the overtime periods.

The SIUE women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Northwestern in its second-round NCAA tourney game Nov. 18 in Durham, North Carolina. The Cougars ended the season with a 10-8-5 record.
