Armed with the advantage of many years of experience, retired township clerk and new independent leadership candidate Barbara Overton recently discussed her qualifications in her bid to become the next president of South Roxana Village.
Seeking the office of village president — also known as mayor — for the village in the upcoming April 4 consolidated election, the Wood River High alumna studied business at Lewis and Clark College in Godfrey. Overton lists four distinct positions during her career which she cites as preparation for village presidency.
First, as well as serving as Chouteau Township clerk for 20 years, Overton sat on the Madison County board for District 15 for six years. Additionally, she has three years worth of hands-on local leadership experience as trustee for South Roxana Village; and served as Democratic Precinct committeeman, also for a six-year period.
During her tenure as township clerk, Overton won two awards: the American Hometown Leadership Award for her efforts following a flood disaster in 1993; and ten years later, the Government Achievement Award from East-West Gateway Coordinating Council of Greater St. Louis.
She expressed her priorities for office as inclusive of economic expansion: “Working full time attracting businesses to our village and [acquiring] grants to help build our financial base to improve the infrastructure,” Overton said.
