House Republicans have responded to the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) recent decision to end abortion services. The policy reversal comes after the VA had previously begun offering such services in 2022, a move that House Republicans say violated federal law.
A joint statement was released by House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mike Bost (R-Ill.), along with Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa), Morgan Luttrell (R-Texas), Derrick Van Orden (R-Wis.), Keith Self (R-Texas), and Tom Barrett (R-Mich.). In their statement, they said:
“It was wrong that the Biden administration violated settled law in 2022 and began offering abortion services through VA. We pushed back hard on this disastrous policy over the last two years to hold the Biden-Harris administration accountable and protect the lives of the unborn. It’s simple – taxpayers do not want their hard-earned money spent on paying for abortions – and VA’s sole focus should always be providing service-connected health care and benefits to the veterans they serve. House Republicans, alongside President Trump, will always stand up for the sanctity of life – today’s decision by Secretary Collins makes that message perfectly clear.”
Mike Bost has served as U.S. Representative for Illinois's 12th congressional district since 2015, winning several elections against Democratic opponents over multiple cycles.
