Granite City FD responds to 41 fires in 2016

Granite City Fire Department responded to 93 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the Metro East Sun.

The calls in Granite City included 41 fires - 11 structure fires, three vehicle fires and 25 other fires. The fire department also responded to two calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $86,252 in fire loss - or about $2,104 per fire.

The department also received 52 false calls.

One fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents and one was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Granite City Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 55 active employees and 73 retired or inactive employees, was $3,330,845 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $81,240 for every fire in 2016.
