Alton will provide a one-time leaf vacuuming service for residents on weekdays throughout the month of December, barring any inclement weather.
The city said in a release the vacuum service will start with Ward 2 from Dec. 4 to 8. The next week, Dec. 11 to 15, it will service streets in Wards 3 and 4 before moving to Wards 1 and 7 from Dec. 19 to Dec. 22. The final week of December, Dec. 26 to 29, will see the vacuum service operating in Wards 5 and 6.
Those seeking to take advantage of this service should rake their leaves to the edge of their yards, but not onto curbs or out onto streets, the release said. A buildup of leaves on the road can lead to problems for the city’s drainage system, and there is a city ordinance barring residents from raking their leaves into the street.
Vacuum trucks will visit each street only once, but those who need their leaves collected sooner or who miss their street's vacuum day can arrange for bagged leaves to be collected through the Alton Public Works Department, the release said.
