Madison senior Dontez Pittman finally slowed down long enough to have some reflection time after sprinting to a pair of medals at the Class 1A State Track and Field Championship in Charleston.
"It's an amazing feeling," Pittman told St. Louis Today after finishing third in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.90 and sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.62. "It's different than any other meet. You've got to have more heart when you're out here."
All season long, Pittman had shown himself to have that in spades. He qualified for the finals by leaving the O’Brien Stadium crowd in awe by racing to the fifth best times of the day in both the 110 hurdles (15.17) and the 300 hurdles (39.80).
In the end, it all was enough to leave him feeling as overwhelmed as anyone in Charleston.
"I was thinking about it before I even took off," Pittman told St. Louis Today of his realization that this would be his last performance in a Madison uniform. "It just hit me all at once that this would be my last meet until college. I was thinking about it before I even took off."
Through it all, Pittman credited all his teammates with being a big part of his huge success.
"My teammates really helped me through the whole season," he said. "They helped me push through a lot of stuff."
