Edwardsville Community Unit School District 7 students suspended 1,326 times in a single school year

Edwardsville Community Unit School District 7 reported 1,326 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 1,326 students during the year. That equates to 17.5 percent of the 7,580 students enrolled.

Of the 978 in-school suspensions, 759 were given to boys and 219 were given to girls, including 475 elementary or middle schoolers and 503 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 799 incidents. There were 129 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 636 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 348 out-of-school suspensions, 273 were given to boys and 75 were given to girls, including 162 elementary or middle schoolers and 186 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 222 incidents. There were 80 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 151 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
