St. Elizabeth's Hospital issued the following announcement on Sept. 4.
HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital recently awarded Philip Gray, RN with the national DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Gray, of Trenton, Illinois, has served as a registered nurse in St. Elizabeth’s emergency department for two years. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's nationwide program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
The nomination was submitted by a patient who believes Philip’s quick action in triage, during a STEMI heart attack saved his life. The nomination shared, “As the ‘gatekeeper’ Philip made the right call at a key time and set the rest of the night in motion. He could have had me sit in the waiting room, but he didn’t. I remember him saying something like: it’s not typical, but something just doesn’t seem right. I can’t recall all the names of the people we saw that night, and who cared for me in the process—there were so many! When all was said and done, the number of names we could remember was over 30—in less than 24 hours—that’s incredible! The care provided at every step was exceptional! Thanks to our Good Lord for his provisions at St. Elizabeth’s through your wonderful staff, I will hopefully have many more healthy years. Thank you, Philip, for making the decision that so positively influenced the remainder of my life.”
“I greatly appreciate the positive feedback and the recognition of the national DAISY Award,” Gray said. “Just as much, it’s great to receive a note from a former patient. As an ER nurse, we often don’t hear what a patient’s outcome is after they leave our care, so it is excellent to hear this patient has had a positive outcome and is doing so well.”
Additionally, just as a daisy cannot survive without a bee, nurses cannot survive without the outstanding teamwork provided by support colleagues. As such, Velvetee Dillard, CNA from the Telemetry B unit, recently received St. Elizabeth’s Being Extraordinary Everyday (BEE) Award. Dillard, of Collinsville, was nominated by a fellow colleague who shared, “Velvetee went above and beyond in helping prepare and calm an uneasy patient before a cardiac cath procedure. When the patient asked Velvetee to pray for the her, Velvetee immediately got down on the patient’s level and said a prayer, which helped calm the patient. She also helped ease the family’s nerves. She is a wonderful CNA and very deserving of this BEE Award.”
“It’s exciting to be recognized,” shared Dillard, who has worked at St. Elizabeth’s for four months. “I love helping our patients every day and making a positive difference in their lives.”
Distribution of the nationally-recognized DAISY Award and the BEE Award at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital have been made possible through funds provided by HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation.
Nominations for future DAISY and BEE Awards at St. Elizabeth’s continue to be accepted.
