State Sen. Rachelle Crowe (D-Glen Carbon) is pushing for an initiative that would require power plant owners to provide advance warning to the surrounding communities of demolition plans.

Crowe was inspired to advance this proposal following the unannounced demolition of the Wood River Power Station caused explosions that raised safety concerns among local Metro East residents, reported Advantage News.

"Following the incident in Wood River earlier this year and to prevent residents from being caught off guard and aware of potential health concerns, Senate Bill 1920 seeks to require plans for power plant demolitions to be made public," Sen. Rachelle Crowe wrote in an April 15 Facebook post.

Senate Bill 1920 would amend the Environmental Protection Act and require power plant owners to provide advance notice to both the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and local populations located within 25 miles of the site at least 60 days before demolition operations commence.

The notice must include information including the scheduled date and time of the demolition, any potential contaminants that may be released and any preventative measures the company will take to mitigate the pollution.

The bill recently passed the Senate Environment Committee and now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
