The Madison County Sheriff's Office and Illinois Sheriffs' Association have partnered to provide a scholarship for Illinois students bound for college the next academic year.

State Rep. Amy Elik (R-Fosterburg)  shared a press release from the ISA on her Facebook page.

The law enforcement group is offering more than $58,000 in scholarships that will cover tuition, books, and fees.

Madison County Sheriff John D. Lakin will be awarding a pair of scholarships in the amount of $500.

“There will be no restriction on any applicant by reason of race, age, creed, color, sex, or national origin,” the release said.

Applications are now available at the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, 405 Randle St., Edwardsville, Illinois 62025, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, or online at www.ilsheriff.org

According to the release, prospective recipients must be a permanent resident of Illinois, enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning within the state, and intend to use the funds as full-time students during the 2022-2023 school year, as well as are required to compose a 350-word essay.

Students have until March 15 to submit all materials to the sheriff’s office in their permanent county of residence, the release said.

The ISA has made available a directory of the state’s sheriff’s offices on its website.

It has been awarding scholarships since 1979, with each Illinois county that participates in the ISA membership program awards at least one $500 scholarship each school year, the ISA wrote on its website.
