Op-ed: What’s at stake

I’ve dedicated my life to caring for the people around me. I strive to care for my community, my clients, my employees, and my family.

That’s why I decided to run for State Representative, to further my service and care for those around me.

Illinois families are facing many challenges. Record inflation, the second-highest property taxes in the nation, failing schools, and rising crime.

I know we can’t let this continue, otherwise, more families will be forced to pack their bags and search for a better opportunity elsewhere, leaving behind the people and the community they love.

It often gets misconstrued when pointing out the failures of our state government that we don’t love where we live. It’s actually quite the opposite. This community is worth fighting for! I knew I could no longer sit on the sidelines while career politicians scheme to benefit themselves and against our families.

My opponent has been in office since 1991, during which time he has been a loyal Madigan foot soldier and was reliably supported by the Chicago Machine. Hoffman supported record income tax hikes and supported hiking taxes even more on small businesses through Gov. Pritzker’s failed graduated income tax amendment. Maybe his most egregious vote, yet, was for the complete dismantling of our criminal justice system that re-prioritizes criminals over law-abiding citizens.

When I talk with the families who love our community as much as I do, these out of touch policies do not align with our shared values.

These policies hold back family’s financial futures, just when they think they are finally getting ahead. They worry their children’s opportunities will get squashed with the lack of quality education and sparing job opportunities and they fear for their safety as police are handcuffed in their ability to catch the real criminals causing harm.

As your State Representative, I will work to restore power to families who feel overlooked and mistreated by the political class. I will use my experience as a small business owner and mom to truly balance the state’s budget and only spend what we can afford. And most importantly, I will continue to be a staunch defender of the brave men and women who sacrifice so much to serve and protect our families even while Springfield politicians promote policies that make them out to be the bad guys.

Families can’t afford another two years with Jay Hoffman and Chicago Democrats in charge. On November 8, vote for a change in Springfield, vote for Ashley Hunsaker.
