On November 1, 2024, BCMW Community Services had to halt operations at their meal centers in Centralia and Salem due to funding shortages. According to a letter from BCMW, the suspension was necessary because their reserve funds were depleted and they faced delays in reimbursements from the US Department of Aging.

State Representative Charlie Meier responded to this issue by collaborating with his House Republican colleagues. "We cannot allow our seniors to go without the support they need," said Meier. He criticized the Democrats in Springfield for failing to maintain support for Meals on Wheels, which he described as "a lifeline for many Illinois seniors."

Meier engaged with various agencies but could not find a long-term solution. Consequently, he worked with House Minority Leader Tony McCombie on a legislative proposal.

The result is HB5911, known as the “Feed Our Seniors Act.” This bill aims to allocate $25 million from the General Revenue Fund to the Department on Aging's Home Delivered Meals Program by reallocating funds from the Department of Human Services intended for Illinois Welcoming Centers. Representative Meier is the Chief Co-Sponsor of this legislation.

"When BCMW had to stop providing their Meals on Wheels, I knew I had to do something," Meier stated. He highlighted state spending priorities, expressing concern that over one billion dollars are allocated for illegal immigrants while essential programs face funding challenges. "Our priorities need to shift. Illinois citizens should come first."

Meier also voiced frustration over accountability issues: "Each day, a new finger is pointed at someone else. No one is willing to take the blame and solve the problem." He called for a committee hearing on HB5911 to address these concerns and ensure seniors receive daily hot meals.
