State Representative Charlie Meier expressed his condolences following the tragic death of Trooper Clay Carns. "I wanted to take a minute and send out condolences and prayers to Trooper Clay Carns family," he said. The incident occurred when Trooper Carns was struck by another driver after he had turned on his lights and pulled over on the shoulder to pick up debris. The accident took place two days before Christmas, leaving behind his wife and two young children. His parents, Danny and Patti Carns, live in the district.

The violation of Scott's Law, which mandates drivers to slow down or change lanes when approaching stationary emergency vehicles with flashing lights, has been identified as a contributing factor in this unfortunate event.
