FOIA Request Sent to Saint Clair County Sheriff Regarding Immigration Detainer Records on January 29, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Saint Clair County Sheriff's office on January 29, 2025. The request, issued by us at Metro East Sun, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, seeks access to specific immigration-related records.

The requested documents pertain to persons committed to county jails in Saint Clair who have had an Immigration Detainer issued against them by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency since January 29, 2024. These records are critical for our ongoing reporting and analysis of local government operations and immigration enforcement activities within the county.

As a media organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, we believe access to these records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. We also believe that we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140.

We await a response from the Saint Clair County Sheriff's office regarding this request. Our aim is always to keep our readers informed about important issues affecting their community. This includes ensuring transparency and accountability in how local law enforcement agencies interact with federal immigration authorities.
