Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Chairwoman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health, led an oversight hearing to examine the roles and responsibilities in administering the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Community Care Program. The hearing aimed to address issues affecting veterans' access to healthcare.

Miller-Meeks highlighted ongoing problems during the Biden administration, including delayed referrals, canceled appointments, and long wait times for treatments within the VA Community Care Program. "Veterans should never have to fight through a maze of bureaucracy to get the healthcare they deserve," she stated.

The hearing followed previous discussions where veterans and their families shared experiences with barriers in accessing community care. Miller-Meeks expressed confidence that under Secretary Collins's leadership, improvements would be made to rectify past failures.

She emphasized that Community Care is intended to supplement VA’s direct care system rather than replace it. Third-party administrators are responsible for building provider networks and paying claims but do not determine eligibility or authorize referrals—tasks assigned to the VA itself.

One example presented was Terry Barngrover, a Vietnam veteran dealing with blood cancer, who described his challenges with community care: “They just expect us to know all the rules. No one answers the phone or returns calls.”

Miller-Meeks stressed her commitment as Chairwoman to ensuring that veterans receive efficient care without unnecessary delays. She anticipated input from VA officials and stakeholders on improving program administration.

Following her remarks, Ranking Member Brownley was invited to deliver her opening statement.
