House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mike Bost recently addressed the first of three annual joint House and Senate Committee hearings focused on veteran service organizations (VSOs). The hearing, part of the 119th Congress, aimed to discuss legislative priorities, concerns, and initiatives for veterans and their families. The event included testimony from several VSOs including DAV, AMVETS, VVA, MOPH, BVA, VES, BSW, and ROA.
Chairman Bost began by welcoming his Senate colleagues Chairman Moran and Ranking Member Blumenthal. He expressed gratitude to D.A.V.’s National Commander Daniel Contreras and his wife Teresa for attending. Christopher Easley from the D.A.V. Auxiliary was also acknowledged.
Bost recognized Peter Dickinson and Shane Lierman from D.A.V.’s National Legislative Staff for their efforts on behalf of veterans. "Their hard work on behalf of Veterans has made a real difference," he stated while wishing them a speedy recovery.
Reflecting on his tenure with the committee, Bost shared that it was personal due to his background as a veteran himself. He emphasized that debates within the committee are centered around veterans rather than bureaucracy. "For me, it’s always about the veteran; it’s not about protecting government bureaucracy," he remarked.
He praised D.A.V.'s work in helping disabled veterans find employment opportunities and highlighted the importance of meaningful recovery through professional engagement. "Recovery from injury is not complete until veterans are able to find meaning and purpose," he quoted from their testimony.
Bost reiterated his commitment to addressing shortcomings within the Department of Veterans Affairs (V.A.) system: "You know where V.A. is falling short." He assured continued advocacy for timely healthcare access and benefits delivery for veterans nationwide.
Underlining recent legislative successes like the Dole Act which streamlined disability claims processes among other improvements, Bost promised ongoing collaboration with VSOs to further enhance services for veterans: "There is much more that we can do."
The chairman concluded by opening the floor to Chairman Moran's remarks as part of continuing discussions during this pivotal hearing session.
