State Representative Charlie Meier has responded to a report from the Illinois Auditor General regarding the HBIA/HBIS program, which offers health benefits to undocumented immigrants. The audit revealed that the program significantly exceeded its enrollment and cost projections.
In his statement, Meier expressed concerns about the sustainability and fairness of the program. He remarked, “Last year, I warned the General Assembly that this program providing health benefits to illegal immigrants was unsustainable and unfair to the taxpayers of Illinois. Now we find out that not only did they egregiously overspend on these benefits, but there were also thousands of improper enrollments in the programs. Shut it down now.”
