Last week, the Illinois House passed 379 bills during its session. Among them were measures viewed positively for Illinois workers, while others faced opposition for being unnecessary, such as a bill concerning school mascots. Representative Kevin Schmidt opposed the legislation banning certain mascots and indicated he would monitor it as it heads to the Senate.

Schmidt expressed opposition specifically to HB3527, which seeks to ban the "Freeburg Midgets" mascot. He stated, "The bottom line is that high school mascot names should be determined by local school boards, not state politicians." He encouraged constituents to contact Senator Chris Belt to express their views on this matter.

In addition to opposing mascot-related bills, Representative Schmidt co-sponsored House Bill 1607. This bill aims to create the Commission on Eliminating Food Deserts Act, which helps state-led efforts to improve food access in underserved communities and rural areas. Schmidt emphasized the importance of the bill by saying, “I support HB1607 because families should never have to struggle to find groceries and other daily essentials due to inadequate access to grocery stores."

Several factors contribute to food deserts, including transportation challenges and income inequality. Last year, $6.4 million in competitive grants were released through the Illinois Department of Agriculture to help bolster the state's food supply chain. Additional resources and grant programs are available through various Illinois departments.

On another note, Schmidt also recognized the Boy Scouts from the Illini District at the Capitol.

Lastly, Schmidt opposed HB1237, another bill involving school mascots, citing concerns over community impact and costs. He urges residents to discuss any concerns with Senator Chris Belt.

Schmidt plans to return to Springfield next week to continue the legislative session and encourages constituents to contact him with any questions.
