Rep. Mike Bost, U.S. Representative for Illinois’ 12th congressional district, addressed several issues on his social media accounts this week, including a local tragedy and the ongoing federal government shutdown.

On October 30, 2025, Bost acknowledged the loss of two community members in Coles County. He wrote: "Coles County mourns the tragic loss of County Board Member Michael Clayton and his wife, Gail, who were killed in a head on collision in Westfield last Friday. Tracy and I are praying for the family during this incredibly difficult time.

Along with the sadness comes anger that" (posted October 30, 2025).

Later that day, Bost commented on the federal government shutdown and called for action from Illinois senators. He stated: "Today I joined my Illinois colleagues, Reps. LaHood and Miller, in demanding our senators reopen the government and end their crippling shutdown. The stakes are too high to play political games with the lives of hardworking Illinoisans." (posted October 30, 2025).

On October 31, Bost discussed impacts of the shutdown on aviation workers: "This week, 13,000 air traffic controllers will go unpaid thanks to the Schumer Shutdown. With thousands more FAA employees working without pay, including technicians who repair and maintain equipment, many families are feeling the pain as our aviation infrastructure and safety is" (posted October 31, 2025).

Mike Bost has represented Illinois’ 12th congressional district since defeating William L. Enyart in 2014 by securing over half of all votes cast. He has maintained his seat through multiple election cycles against various challengers—Charles Baricevic in 2016; Brendan Kelly in 2018; Raymond Lenzi in 2020; and Chip Markel most recently in 2022—consistently winning with significant margins.

The current government shutdown referenced by Bost is affecting federal operations nationwide. The impact extends to essential personnel such as air traffic controllers and Federal Aviation Administration employees.
