Illinois State Representative Kevin Schmidt (R-Cahokia) recently visited Joni’s House in East St. Louis, a group that provides respite care for families living with disabilities. He also met with East St. Louis City Manager Robert Betts to discuss community needs and potential improvements along the riverfront.
Schmidt criticized recent state policy decisions, stating: “Pritzker Promises Affordability, Delivers the Opposite. In yet another exaggerated claim, Governor JB Pritzker told reporters that Democrats have been ‘delivering for the people’ of Illinois. But the actions taken by the Governor and his allies in the General Assembly prove the opposite, year-after-year.” Governor JB Pritzker responded during a media availability: “I think that is what the Democratic Party is all about, delivering for the people. And here in Illinois, we’ve been doing that, I’ve been doing that for the last several years.”
Recent legislative sessions resulted in an $8 billion energy package known as the “Green New Giveaway” and a $2.5 billion bailout for Chicago Transit, which includes tax increases and toll hikes.
This month, Rep. Schmidt donated his legislative pay raise to Press Play, an organization helping feed homeless individuals during Thanksgiving in memory of Nancy Nixson’s two children who died from gun violence. Schmidt has consistently donated his monthly pay raises to local food pantries or non-profits since voting against salary increases for legislators.
A new analysis highlights a provision within SB 2111—the Northern Illinois Transit Authority Act—passed in late October by Democratic majorities and supported by Gov. Pritzker. The bill includes a significant increase in tolls on heavy trucks using Illinois toll roads starting January 1, 2027, with additional increases planned afterward. Analysts note these higher transportation costs may be passed on to consumers through increased prices on supermarket goods and other truck-delivered items.
Schmidt was elected as a Republican representative to Illinois' 114th House District in 2023 after succeeding LaToya Greenwood.
